Siemens und Halske Type 58 TZ 170 , 04 Feb. 2006 17:34
The museum by which I am employed recently acquired a Siemens receiver [transceiver?] whose data plate reads "SIEMENS & HALSKE TYP 58 TZ 170 #17554". On the front cover plate is: "TYPENBILDSCHREIBER FUR DRAHTBETREIB TBS/24A-32"
Can anyone on this forum supply any information about this unit? I am not an expert in radio equipment, nor am I a regular reader of this forum, so I ask that you: a) write any responses with that fact in mind and: b) send a copy of any reply to me at dhamer@cryptogram.org
Contact me at the above address for images in .JPG format.

Hello David, I can only help with the tanslation of "TYPENBILDSCHREIBER FUR DRAHTBETREIB TBS/24A-32". But the translation word by word is not really a good idea. Result of my translation: Type (character?) picture (image?, photo?) writer (sender?) for wire based operation (not for wireless operation).
I think, this equipment was in use in the early years for commercial and military communication . So it is not known in my "old-time radio sets related mind". A look in Google with "Siemens +bildschreiber" offers only some pages in German language.
Anyway there were different picture-senders in use like the "Hell-Schreiber" (Faksimile-Telegraphy) . This was a system for sending letters (characters) as graphics, the result was a tape with letters similar to a tele-typer tape. But also systems were in use with a picture tube, similar to a oscilloscope. The problem is "Bildschreiber" is not THE word for ONE principle. Different systems used this name.
